Romans 10:14

How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

“Why should I hope?” asked the king of Israel in Elisha’s day Why? Because God can make an army run away in fright. God can use unseen things to overcome the things that we can see.

God can rescue us and can turn away evil. God can spread a lavish banquet even in the presence of our enemies. God can bring salvation—light in darkness, comfort in grief, peace in bitterness, healing in brokenness, and strength in weakness.

Why should we hope? Because we have a shepherd who will lay down his life for his sheep to protect us. Because we have a Saviour who can travel down into the deepest, darkest hell any of us can imagine and come out alive. Because there isn’t a single valley in the shadow of death that our shepherd cannot walk us through. Because he claims us as his own and will never let us go. That is why we can hope.

That is why we are prophets. We have been given the message of hope and are told to share it. How will others believe the good news unless they hear it, and how will they hear it unless they are told?

We have our assignment—go and bring the good news of Jesus Christ so that others too can have this hope.

~T. Leunk.

Lord, our shepherd, thank you for your loving care. Help me to share the good news of your love with those who need to hear it. Amen.

Prayers for our troubled world

Lord, we lift our world in prayer. There’s so much pain and suffering. Give us your wisdom and teach us how to pray for the world. May your kingdom come; your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Please protect those vulnerable to the illness around the world. We think especially of those living in poverty, where medical assistance may be more difficult to access. Father, we pray for your protection and healing. We pray for our partner churches in different parts of the world working so hard to look after their community with limited resources. We also pray for health care workers and medical researchers. Thank you for their tireless and selfless service. Lord, we praise you for the recent medical advances against this disease. We pray resources will be fairly distributed around the world. Amen.

Prayer to Encourage Others

Heavenly Lord, the more I ponder it, the more amazed I am how much I can immediately increase or decrease my joy and the joy of others by simply choosing to say things that are good, and true. You have told us that joy is vital, joy is our strength. Satan works overtime trying to do anything he can to diminish our joy. Holy God do not let me sit by and let this happen by inattention. Steer me to fight the good fight with faith-filled words, releasing joy into the very atmosphere.

Lord Jesus, you came to bring good news and glad tidings of great joy, to overcome evil with good. I know you wish me to be as committed as you were to finding and magnifying the good in every part of life. Help me to say something good, to express my salvation and to encourage others! Amen.
