6th. May 2020. Daily Devotion.

Today, here are two thoughts about the nature of God.

God is Unchanging.

“When you go to the people of Israel, tell them, ‘I am sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14

Do you know anyone who goes around saying, “I am”? Neither do I. When we say, “I am,” we always add another word. “I am happy.” “I am sad.” “I am strong.” “I am Max.” God, however, starkly states, “I am” and adds nothing else.

“You are what?” we want to ask. “I am,” he replies. God needs no descriptive word because he never changes. God is what he is. He is what he has always been. His immutability motivated the psalmist to declare, “But you never change” (Psalm 102:27). The writer is saying, “You are the One who is. You never change.” Yahweh is an unchanging God. God Cares About You.

He saw the troubles of the people of Israel, and he was concerned about them. Exodus 2:25

Consider the earth! Our globe’s weight has been estimated at six sextillion tons (a six with twenty-one zeroes). Yet it is precisely tilted at twenty-three degrees; any more or any less and our seasons would be lost in a melted polar flood. Though our globe revolves at the rate of one-thousand miles per hour or twenty-five thousand miles per day or nine million miles per year, none of us tumbles into orbit …

As you stand … observing God’s workshop, let me pose a few questions. If he is able to place the stars in their sockets and suspend the sky like a curtain, do you think it is remotely possible that God is able to guide your life? If your God is mighty enough to ignite the sun, could it be that he is mighty enough to light your path? If he cares enough about the planet Saturn to give it rings or Venus to make it sparkle, is there an outside chance that he cares enough about you to meet your needs? From The Great House of God

It can be easy to forget that God cares for us individually. He has given us each a sense of being – a sense of who He is. We say, “I am…” and by faith through Jesus Christ, our “I am” is eternal; eternally called and loved by God. Sometimes we feel we do not deserve to be loved and cared for when we have a sense of sin, failure, or unworthiness, but God’s love, like everything about him, is an unchanging love. It is we who must change by grace, accepting his love and allowing grace to transform us into his likeness in Jesus Christ. And in the meantime:

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”1 Peter 5:7

Psalm Fragment

13 I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:13-14

Prayer

Father, you sustain all things by Your powerful Word and through Your sovereign control. The natural order of Your creation is how we live day after day, year after year. Just as there are variables in the seasons there are variables in our lives as we walk this pilgrimage on earth. There are bright, clear days in which we feel on top of the world, and there are dark, cold days when we feel our world will soon come to a halt. But we are encouraged as we look to Your powerful Word that reminds us You are our loving God who sustains us in the variables of our daily circumstances. Because of that we can trust You even in the extremes of life. We thank You in the powerful name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.
