Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to his name; worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness.
Psalm 29:1-2

What is worship? The essential meaning of the word in both Old and New Testaments is reverential service – a truth we see illustrated by the conduct of the winged seraphs above the eternal throne of God in Isaiah’s vision. Our present day English word ‘worship’ has evolved from the Anglo-Saxon weorthscip which means to give worth to someone or something. Worship can be best understood by think of the word in this way: worth-ship. The worship of God then, is attributing worth to Him – and only Him.

The primary reason for our existence on this earth is to worship God. When we understand all that is involved in this then our faith will throb with a new power and prove itself sufficient for any task.  Selwyn Hughes.

Father, I ask myself in your presence: How much of my life is spent in worship? How much time do I give to thinking of you and only you? Help me to draw near to you, not to ask for things, but just to worship you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Freedom from Fear

O Lord, I beseech you to deliver me, and all of your children, from the fear of the unknown future; from fear of failure; from fear of poverty; from fear of bereavement; from fear of loneliness; from fear of sickness and pain; from fear of age; from fear of death. Help us, O Father, by your grace to love and fear only you, and fill our hearts with cheerful courage and loving trust in you, through our Lord and Master Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Healing

Compassionate God, your Son gives rest to those weary with heavy burdens. Heal the sick in body, mind, and spirit. Lift up the depressed. Befriend those who grieve. Comfort the anxious. Stand with all victims of abuse and violence. Uphold those who live with addiction. Fill us all with your Holy Spirit that we may bear each other’s burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ. God of mercy, hear our prayer. Amen. ~ Book of Common Worship, PCUSA
