32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

The importance of kindness and compassion in Christian life is enormous. “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (Colossians 3:12) The message is repeated by every person in the New Testament, including Christ: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34)

What makes us unkind? One cause is lack of faith; another might be, insufficient education in the Gospel. But a specific cause of much unkindness is our own pain. It could be the pain of poor self-image, or a feeling of entitlement — a lack of gratitude. Or it could be physical pain — enough pain makes anyone crabby.

Most people who have been Christians for any length of time understand kindness. Just in secular life, anyone without a mental problem learns to treat some people – often people who can do them some good – with a degree of decency and respect. But of course, as Christians, we are expected to show kindness universally, to everyone. M. Barge.

Father, let me remember and put into effect your commandment that we be kind to one another, whether I feel like it or not. Amen.

Grant us, O God, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us do, that the spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices; that in your light we may see light, and in your path may not stumble; through Christ our Lord. Amen. William Reed Huntington (1838-1909)

To Walk in the Spirit Today

Holy God, in the daily journey from sunrise to sunset, remind me always of your holy presence hovering near, both within me to guide me, and surrounding me to protect me. Free me from shame and self-doubt; and help me, and all of my fellow believers, to see the myriad opportunities to walk our path in the courage, honesty, and wisdom inspired by your Holy Spirit. Amen.

A Prayer for Justice in the World

We pray for countries where justice seems far away, where human rights are ignored. Let us remind those in power that prisoners are not forgotten.
We pray that the dignity of life is respected and remember those who have lost that dignity through age or infirmity or neglect.
We pray for situations where the sex of a baby may lead to abandonment,
where women are not offered the same opportunities, or are actively demeaned or mutilated.
May we act to challenge injustice and seek to affirm your love for all humankind.
God of mercy and love let us serve you in our world. Amen.

Meditation

“No one would remember the Good Samaritan if he had only had good intentions.”
